Many people who support Amnesty International Ireland are under the impression that they are a resource for refugees seeking protection in this country. This is not the case.

Amnesty International Ireland offers little or no aid for those suffering persecution who find it necessary to flee their own countries to Europe or within Ireland.

Amnesty International Ireland is simply a talking shop. The most shocking aspect of this is that Amnesty International Ireland will often use images of refugees fleeing persecution as part of their continuous and aggressive fundraising campaign. Where does this money go?

It is certainly not going to the refugees who are in urgent need of assistance. Rather it is used to augment the salaries of its many staff, whose sole function seems to be a cycle of fundraising and expenditure.

If one were to look at the work of Amnesty International Ireland and that of the Irish Refugee Council, one would think that both organisations offer similar roles. This is not the case. The Irish Refugee Council offers real support for people from a broad spectrum of countries on a huge variety of issues and offers everything from a drop-in centre that assists refugees with their asylum applications, assist them with the difficult issue of family reunification, the filling in of relevant documentation facilitating and support with them regarding deportation orders, assistance with accommodation, the issue of children’s rights.

The question is what does Amnesty offer? Re-hash press releases from its international group and re-tweets, seems more interested in the fundraising than real assistance to these people in need.
